History of the House

Wickham Place was built in 1926. Originally standing in 55 acres of beautiful orchards and woodland.

Wickham Place, Hurstpierpoint, Front of Guest House

In the hall at Wickham Place you will find a photograph of the house taken in 1932. Then the house stood in its own grounds at the top of a private tree-lined drive leading off College Lane.

Wickham Place, Hurstpierpoint, Fireplace

Originally Wickham Place had 13 fireplaces in the house of which 2 have been restored. The house was fitted with servant bells and these are still in operation.

Wickham Place, Hurstpierpoint, HallwayDuring the 2nd World War, Wickham Place was used by the Canadian Army as accommodation for their officers.

It was in the 1960's that land was sold to build the estate that now surrounds Wickham Place (i.e. Highfield Drive and Spinney Close) as the aerial photograph in the hall shows. And in the 1980's the house and garden was sold. That is when we purchased Wickham Place, which retains its character with original leaded light windows, oak staircase and walled garden.

Where to Eat

In the centre of the village (about 10 minute's walk) there are 2 pubs that serve "Pub Grub", 2 restaurants (which are highly recommended). There is an Indian, a Chinese restaurant and also a wine bar (Bistro).

Outside the village and only a short drive are many more places to eat including The Pilgrims Goose at Hassocks.

All of the local villages are worthy of a visit. The area is full of interest whatever your pastime - there are gardens to visit, the famous Sussex downs to walk, cycle or hike on or just relaxation. Several golf courses are situated nearby. There are a limited number of tourist brochures in the Dining Room, but if we can help in any way, please let us know.
