Some of the History of Warner's Farm
Warners Farm
The original farm is pre-Tudor and believed to date back to before 1430.
We have many historic documents, and deeds from1630, some on pigskin.
Probably built in the reign of Henry VI, this house has survived the ravages of at least twenty nine monarchs and two "Protectors".
Just imagine what might have happened here in the last nearly 600 years - walls may have ears but if only the timbers could talk!

Originally thatched, sadly a previous owner replaced the thatch with clay tiles, which proved too heavy so then used cedar shingles.
In the oldest part of the house there is good evidence of the extensive use of ships' timbers, especially on the small back staircase.

The beamed drawing room, with a large 2 sided inglenook fireplace, and the small rooms at the end were the original farmhouse. In 1981 various "modern" extensions were added to the rear. In 1989, when we moved here we added a bedroom suite and farmhouse kitchen, which had been in the drawing room!

The house had various ponds and maybe a moat. The remaining pond is filled by a natural spring, and was probably the source of clay used for the original construction of the house. It was also the rubbish bin for hundreds of years, and we found many old bottles and other interesting items when cleaning it.As we are on a Roman road, this spring water might have been used by the travellers through the ages and may have been the site of an ancient hostelry!

Our large hoard of coins, buttons and bullets, found here by metal detecting, stretches back to pre-Tudor times and includes an Elizabethan sixpence.

We endeavour to offer every comfort and all that is best in a B&B, providing the perfect combination of old and new, to give you a memorable experience you will want to repeat.
