The Pines Guest House, Newtonmore

"The Pines" is set in over an acre of its own garden ground amidst the spectacular mountain scenery of the Cairngorm National Park of which it has commanding views. Away from the hub-bub of Newtonmore's busy main street and offering facilities to its residents only, "The Pines" affords a tranquil retreat yet is still within walking distance of the village's facilities. During the eight years we have lived and traded here we have been pleased that so many satisfied guests have returned again and again and, of course, we look forward to sharing our home with new visitors whether a leisurely visit beckons or business necessitates a trip to Newtonmore.

A traditional Edwardian house, "The Pines" provides spacious guest accommodation in five bedrooms (two single; three double / twin) all of which have en-suite shower rooms with a sixth, double, room having an en-suite bathroom. "No Smoking" throughout, all rooms are centrally heated, comfortably furnished and equipped with colour television, clock radio, hospitality tray and hair drier. All have views of the surrounding hills with most enjoying panoramic mountain views to the South or East of the house. To ensure that your stay with us is not only comfortable but safe, the house is protected by smoke or heat detectors in each room and the proprietors are on hand throughout your stay. The Pines Guest House, Newtonmore

Available for residents' use during the day is a comfortable lounge area. More especially, however, guests have access not only to a formal garden at the front of the house but also to the extensive private grounds in which they will find a wide variety of mature trees including Silver Birch, Copper Beech, Spruce and Scots Pines. Wildlife lovers may wish to take advantage of our bird viewing areas. Regular feathered visitors to the garden include blackbirds, robins, chaffinches, bullfinches, siskins, blue tits, great tits, coal tits, long tailed tits, pheasants and partridges. Those with keener eyes may wish to look out for some of the 80 or so less common birds (including crested tits) which earlier guests have observed in or near the garden during their stay! Others visiting the garden regularly include red squirrels (who have their own feeding box), rabbits and hedgehogs.

While staying at "The Pines"...

Having spent many happy holidays in Badenoch and Strathspey ourselves we know the area well and are always happy to help plan your days out. As an all too brief summary...

Opportunities for wildlife spotting beyond our garden are many and various with visits to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's Highland Wildlife Park, Rothiemurchus Estate's "Pine Marten" watch, the RSPB reserves at Insh Marshes National Nature Reserve and Abernethy all thoroughly recommended.

Newtonmore's "Wildcat Trail", a series of marked paths, offers some outstanding opportunities for walking; whether it be a gentle riverside stroll; a more energetic hill walk; through woodland or over moorland whilst "Munro Baggers" will find some twenty or so peaks within easy driving distance of the house. We have a range of maps available for guests' use when planning walks with more comprehensive information being available at the "Wildcat Centre" in the village's Main Street.

Golf can be played at any of the seven courses throughout Badenoch and Strathspey of which the nearest, Newtonmore's, is within easy walking distance.

Winter visitors will find that the ski slopes of Cairngorm are easily accessible with those at Aonach Moor just over an hour away. Cairngorm mountain with its funicular railway is not to be missed at any time of year. Enthusiasts of fishing, pony trekking, mountain or quad biking and 4X4 off-road driving are catered for locally.

Newtonmore is home to the Clan MacPherson Museum, with its displays of historic clan relics including mementos relating to the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. It also hosts the Clan gathering and Highland Games each August. The much acclaimed and multi award winning Highland Folk Park which shows insights into Highland life from early 18th century townships to mid 20th century working crofts is also within the village.

The Whisky distilleries of Speyside and the Strathspey Steam Railway are also worth a visit. And if that's not enough you can try spotting some of the scenery featured in BBC TV's "Monarch of the Glen" which was filmed locally, Newtonmore having doubled for many locations in the fictional Highland village of Glenbogle!
