The Hotel
Originally a Georgian farmhouse and listed Grade II for its architectural interest, Thanington House was built in approximately 1800. The second floor has added in 1830 together with the distinctive black cowls over the first floor windows.
Thanington Hotel opened in 1987 when ten purpose-built hotel rooms were completed and linked to the main house by a beautiful Georgian conservatory. In 1992 the indoor heated swimming pool was completed. A further five bedrooms have recently been added enhancing the accommodation for our guests and the facilities are constantly being improved.Wincheap.
Wincheap was established by the year A.D. 1200 and because of the lack of space within the city walls became the site of many markets and fairs. There are two theories regarding the name 'Wincheap', firstly that it is derived from the Saxon Wenchiape or 'Wine-Cheap' meaning that a wine market was once held here; secondly that the name derives from Weychep from the old English "Waegnceap" - a wagon. Wagons would originally have been stored here for buying or selling: this would further explain the width of the road, one of the widest in Canterbury.
Wincheap was well established as a suburb of Canterbury by the thirteenth century. It still retains much of its character today and is in the Canterbury Conservation Area. |
