History of The Swan in East Ilsely, Berkshire
East Ilsley was the site of the Battle of Ashdown in 871 when Alfred defeated the Danes. After the battle a community must have grown up, for the name Ilsley is itself a corruption of battle field. East Ilsley was a major sheep fairing village, and it is recorded that there was as many as 24 taverns catering for Market day, but many of these were private houses. The Swan was a prominent Inn and is known to be one of the oldest Inns in East Ilsley dating back to 1620 as mentioned in the Domesday Book. By the eighteenth century the Duke of Cumberland had brought race horses to the village and training rapidly became a new industry, with the swan becoming a posting house with stabling for 50 horses. |
