View towards South Hooe Captains House

South Hooe Mine Captain's House, with The Count House below, are close to the river Tamar, nestled in the wooded south-facing bank. Both have magnificent views down the river. At the water's edge is a landing jetty for small boats. Deep-water moorings can be arranged at the nearby boatyard. www.weir-quay.com

South Hooe is in a rural parish between the rivers Tamar and Tavy. A leisurely stay awaits you with meals on the lawn when the sun shines or big open fires to warm you after walks along the river, through woods and across fields. The tidal estuary is the winter home of the avocets and many other wading birds.

Bird watching, (Avocets spend the winter here), boating, wonderful walks and riding are all at hand. Dartmoor lies 7 miles to the Northeast. One hour away is the north Cornish Coast with its spectacular beaches and surfing. Local attractions include Morewellham Quay, Buckland Abbey, Cotehele and other National Trust Properties and many beautiful Devon and Cornish gardens. The local market town of Tavistock is seven miles away.

This could be beef lamb or pork from the farm. There is a woodburner to snuggle up next to in the sitting room.

Unhurried, you can live by the tide as Trish leaves all ingredients for breakfast in the fridge: Homemade bread and marmalade, sometimes bacon from John's free range pigs, stewed apples from the orchard and, of course eggs from the hens. Peace and privacy await you. Footsteps in the night are usually Martha's, the very antique donkey, who grazes nearby
