Enjoy England 4 Stars

Rye Farm is a 17th century moated farmhouse, on the edge of the village of Layer de la Haye in north east Essex. We are about 4 miles south of Colchester, in attractive, unspoilt rural surroundings. Rye Farm is an ideal place to come for a relaxing break. It also provides a good base for exploring the area's many attractions.
The farmhouse itself enjoys a quiet location, adjacent to Abberton Reservoir, but is within easy walking distance of the village which has a shop and a couple of pubs which do evening meals.
At Rye Farm we offer a warm welcome, comfortable accommodation and excellent views over the local countryside. Ample parking is available.
Rye Farm has the Visit Britain (Tourist Board) 'Walkers and Cyclists Welcome' award. |
Breakfast
Start the day by enjoying a substantial freshly-cooked English farmhouse breakfast in the relaxed comfort of our kitchen. |

The Rooms
Our comfortable well-equipped rooms each have:
- En-suite facilities
- Colour Television and DVD Player
- Central heating
- Tea and coffee making equipment
- Hairdryer
- Refrigerator
One room has fine views over Abberton Reservoir. From another you can observe the comings and goings in our farmyard - the hub of a real working farm. |
A Working Farm
We are a working farm, part of which is arable, growing crops under wide open East Anglian skies, and we have livestock.
To the front of the house is the moat, popular with our Aylesbury ducks.
Beyond the moat, the farmhouse looks out over Abberton Reservoir. This 1200 acre Reservoir is a Wetland of International Importance, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area, and one of the most important wildfowl havens in Europe. Some of the wildfowl seem to prefer the facilities we offer at Rye Farm! |

Directions
From the A12 to Colchester, come off at Junction 26, signposted Colchester West/Stanway/Zoo. Follow the signs (white elephant on brown background) to the Zoo. Pass the Zoo on your right and at the next roundabout, follow the Layer B1026 signs, which will bring you into the centre of the village. At the crossroads by the Fox Tavern, turn left into Malting Green Road. Pass the village shop and about 300 yards on your right there is a turning signposted "Rye Farm". Once in the lane, pass the cottages on your left, follow the road all the way to the end and you will arrive at the farmhouse. |
