Rowan House, Edinburgh, Exterior of House

Rowan House is situated in a leafy residential area, a mile and a half south of the city centre. We are one street off the main road so we have easy access to an excellent bus service, yet our quiet location guarantees a good night's sleep. Parking, just outside the door, is restricted, but if you prefer, we have off-street parking available.

The house was built in 1881 and still retains many original features, but the bedrooms are modern, bright and comfortable.

We have a variety of accommodation to suit all requirements and all price budgets. We are also one of the few guest houses in the city to have 3 single rooms. Apart from being centrally heated, all rooms have back-up heating (which you control yourself), complimentary tea/coffee and biscuits and colour television.

We serve a large Scottish breakfast each morning including porridge and freshly baked scones. Special dietary requirements are also catered for, by arrangement.

Rowan House is well located for all tourist attractions including the Castle, Holyrood Palace and the Royal Mile. All University of Edinburgh departments are within easy walking distance, as is the Royal College of Surgeons and the Edinburgh Veterinary College. The Commonwealth Swimming Pool is only a ten minutes' walk and this lies next to the Queen's Park, which has Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano, at its heart.

Eating out in Edinburgh these days is a complete treat. We have more restaurants, per head of the population, than anywhere else in the U.K. outside of London. Locally, there are Scottish, French, Indian, Italian, Chinese and North African establishments.

Travel Directions:

From Waverley Station or the Bus Station, take bus numbers 3,29,31 or 37 from outside the former C. & A. department store on Princes Street. The fare, correct money only, is 80p or £1.50 for a day ticket (after 9.30 a.m., all day Saturday and Sunday). Alight at Mayfield Gardens (third bus stop after commencement of the residential area) and cross the road to enter Bright's Crescent. Glenorchy Terrace is the first turning on the left. Alternatively, you may take a taxi, costing approximately £5.00, from the station concourse.

From the Airport, a taxi is about £18.00, or the airport bus, to the city centre, is £3.30 single. By car, take the A8 heading for the city, and then at the Gogar Roundabout, the A720 city by-pass heading south east of the city. At Straiton Junction A701, head north for the city, and after about 3 or 4 miles you will come to a roundabout. Once through this, you should be on a street called Craigmillar Park (still the A701). Four blocks along on the left, you will pass Craigmillar Park Church and a couple of shops, after which take the second turning left into Bright's Crescent, then first left into Glenorchy Terrace.

By car from the North, it is advisable to avoid the city centre, with its one-way restrictions, and head south to the by-pass directions as above.

From the South A1, take the A6095 from the town of Musselburgh and continue to a large roundabout with a railway bridge over the top. Go straight on here, onto Lady Road and on to another large roundabout where you should turn right onto Craigmillar Park A701 (for city centre) directions as airport. Coming from the A7 or A68, look out for the same railway bridge roundabout but then turn first left and follow directions as above. The M6 and A74 will take you onto the A702. From this, join the A720 city by-pass heading southeast, coming off at Straiton Junction A701, following the same directions as the airport.
