| Situated at the end of Eastgate, a few minutes stroll from Louth town centre, The Priory is a hidden treasure, combining genuine hospitality and high standards with a unique combination of history and architecture. A grade II listed building, The Priory was built in 1812 - 1818 from reclaimed masonry and decorative work and is a unique building for it's time being designed and built by Thomas Espin FSA, a schoolmaster, artist, mathematician and architect. He designed a new town hall (rebuilt at a much later date) and, instead of being paid a fee for his designs, he was gifted the masonry and materials from the ruins of the former Town Hall as well as the 12th Century Louth Park Abbey. Sadly Mr. Espin died in 1822 and is buried, at his wish in the former summer house next to the lake in the grounds of his beloved Priory. This building contains his tombstone and is a miniature version of the main house. The Priory was then run as a boys school known as the Academy for several decades and was then a private residence for many notable citizens of Louth. In 1977 it was converted into a hotel and has been known as the Priory Hotel since. |
