Marlborough House is an enchanting small hotel owned and operated by Laura and Charles Dunlap in a friendly and informal style. Located in the heart of Georgian Bath, this impressive stone Victorian house has lovely and spacious rooms furnished with beautiful antiques that have been assiduously chosen and assembled with felicity and taste.Every room has a distinctive style, ranging from Georgian to Art Nouveau, from stately 200-year old four poster beds to uncommonly elegant 19th century chinoiserie and Art Deco dressing tables. Meanwhile, every modern convenience is provided for the contemporary visitor to this historic city.
Marlborough House is especially notable for it's eclectic cuisine. Using a wide range of fine, fresh ingredients - splendidly organic and free of genetic modification - the menu is unusually diverse, with special diets happily catered for.Regretfully, we are no longer serving our unique candle lit dinners, due to family concerns. However, if you are desperate due to special dietary or physical requirements, we can be convinced to cook up of our fabulous vegetarian meals just for you.
The atmosphere of the hotel is delightfully hospitable, with the proprietors and staff committed to their guests' comfort and ease. The staff take pride in the unique character of the house and do their utmost to maintain an environment both immaculate and inviting, while Charles and Laura enjoy being amiable and helpful hosts. Together, every effort is made to ensure a thoroughly enjoyable stay. |

Bath is a small, but cosmopolitanand lovely city. With its architectural integrity and the golden hue of its stone, it is like a jewel set within the verdent rolling hills of the West County's pastoral landscape. Bath, with it's mineral hot springs, renowned for over two millennia, is the ancient urban centre of an archeologically rich historical setting that stretches back to the Roman era and beyond. As such ,it is the perfect base from which toexplore other nearby historical sites, all within 45 minutes of Marlborough House: Stonehenge, Wells,Glastonbury, Lacock, Castle Combe, Cheddar Gorge, or Longleat, the spectacular home of the Marquis of Bath.
Charles and Laura are happy to offer guidance for the best routes and itineraries to explore Bath and thesurrounding area, or for suggestions on the array of the city's fine restaurants. Charles has a wealth of knowledge about musical events in the area and Laura is always pleased to offer advice on antique shopping in this antique hunter's mecca. |

Directions
From the M4, take the Bath exit junction 18 (A46 to Bath), winding through the green hills surrounding Bath. From the A46, take the Bath exit, through the big round-about and on to the A4 (London Road), where you must stay despite all efforts to draw you around the outskirts.
You will be driving along with the other traffic until you come to a large traffic lit intersection. This is where all signs point to city centre on your left. They are a trick! Here you must be in the right lane so you can keep straight on the road into Bath, right through Bath (staying on the A4) as if you were heading toward Bristol (A4) and you will drive through our small uptown district, around three sides of Queen Square and out the other side, turning left, onto Charlotte stret, down to where it joins the Upper Bristol Road (the A4 again).
You will be passing a string of unremarkable B&Bs on your right, but we are the first right turn(Marlborough Lane) on the upper Bristol Road, just pass the pedestrian lights, with a Vauxhall dealer on your left. Turn right there and then immediately into our driveway as we are number 1 Marlborough Lane |
Airport - Rail connections to Bath
Heathrow
There are two ways of taking the train from Heathrow to Bath
Take the coach (bus) from Heathrow to Reading, then take the train from Reading to Bath Spa Station. The coach trip takes about 50 minutes; the train from Reading to Bath takes about one hour.
Take the train from the station at Heathrow. This takes you into Paddington Station in London (taking about 20 minutes), where you then take a train direct from Paddington to Bath Spa Station which takes 1 hour and 15 minutes.
You need to check what terminal you are coming in on (flights from the US are usually into Terminal 4) and at what terminal the train station is located (I think Terminal 4).
Gatwick
There is a train station in Gatwick airport. You will take a train to Reading, where you must change over the another train from Reading to Bath Spa Station. Connections are frequent and not difficult. The entire journey takes about one and a half hours.
If you are coming from the US, it is best to book the train journey from the US as there are cost saving schemes available there that are not available here. This may be true of other countries as well.
You can also book fare-saver tickets (Apex and Super Apex) by calling directly to the train information line in England: Dial 011 44 345 48 49.There is a BritRail Office and telephone number in the US which should be available from information or any travel agency.
There is also a BritRail wesite at: http://www.railtrack.co.uk |
