Your Hosts

Your hosts are Richard and Heather Betton-Foster. Richard was born in Surrey, but has lived and worked as an architect in Somerset for some years. His Foster ancestors were high ranking clergymen at Wells Cathedral in the 18th century and visitors to the Cloisters Restaurant will see, towards the far end, marble plaquesdedicated to many of Richards forebears. Heather was born some 20 miles from Wells at Castle Cary. She has been a teacher locally for many years and has Somerset very much in her blood. Both Richard and Heather have relished the opportunity in 1997 to embark on this venture in Wells with its traditions, history, music and architecture.

An Invitation

Richard and Heather invite you to come to Infield House to experience 19th century elegance with 21st century comfort. Whether visiting for a single night, a weekend break or a more lengthy stay, you can be assured of a warm welcome and a friendly personal service.

Wells

Wells Cathedral, the first completely English Gothic Cathedral, was built in the 12th and 13th centuries on the site of a church dating back to 800AD. On the west face is the greatest array of 13th century sculpture to be found anywhere. Inside, magnificent features abound including the beautiful scissor arch. Frequentguided tours are available. After your tour, continue to absorb the atmosphere over a cup of tea, a light snack or a full lunch in the Cathedral's own Cloisters Restaurant. The Cathedral is often the venue for a variety of classical and ecclesiastical music programmes.

The Bishops Place, with its moat, swans, ducks and tranquil gardens offers a sharp contrast to the bustling market square, just steps away.

Vicars Close, is reputed to be the oldest intact medieval street in Europe. Look for Number 22 which has been restored to its original appearance. Today the Close is occupied by clergy and officers of the Cathedral.

Wells Museum, is housed in a 16th century building and holds a fine collection of historical artifacts including Roman treasures.

Penniless Porch, gained its name in medieval times when beggars congregated there seeking alms. The porch, now the home of street enterainers, offers access from the Cathedral Green to themarket place with its quaint tea rooms, antique and other shops including a National Trust store. A twice weekly market is held throughout the year. The Town Hall which faces the square is often the venue for antique fairs and other events.

The High Street, leads from the market square. Many of the High Street businesses have 20th century shop fronts but the buildings in which they sit have uneven roof lines and dateback to the 15th-17th century. The Kings Arms still has its 14th century roof; the City Arms served as the city gaol from 16th-19th century.

St Cuthberts Church, with its soaring west tower lies a few metres beyond the City Arms. The building, said to be the largest parish church in Somerset, is often mistaken for the Cathedral.

Restaurants and Pubs, Wells is blessed with a wealth of eateries, some award winning, all within easy walk of Infield House. From a pub style meal to a multi course dining experience all tastes and budgets can be catered for in style.
