CROESO I'R HAFOD
(WELCOME TO THE SUMMER DWELLLING)

Situated on the northern edge of Snowdonia and overlooking the lovely Conwy Valley, Yr Hafod (The Summer Dwelling) was formerly a farmhouse and dates from the middle ages. Here your hosts, Chris & Rosina Nichols, have set about creating a special place for their guests to stay; a small, informal, non-smoking, country retreat, away from the crowds and providing warm hospitality, with exceptional food at its heart. All the bedrooms are individually styled and furnished and are, naturally, en-suite and provided with all the facilities that are expected these days. We prefer to emphasise the extra touches, the vase of flowers, the sherry, fruit & mineral water and the extra heavy towels or the antique furniture that make Yr Hafod stand out from the crowd.

Despite only having six bedrooms, Yr Hafod has a separate bar, a large lounge, with a huge open fireplace, and a large dining room where guests have plenty of space. The grounds, which include an off road car park, extend to some two & half acres and an ambitious scheme to create landscaped gardens, including a Japanese garden, are well under way. A balcony surrounds most of the building and all bedrooms have direct access onto it; a place to enjoy the sun and views or, even listen to the sounds of the many owls in the surrounding trees and woodlands at night.

We take the view that truly good food is essential to our guests' enjoyment (of their stay). At the last two Welsh Tourist board inspections it was graded as exceptional; the top grade. We have also featured on the Good Hotel Guide's web site, as one of the top 10 hotels in North Wales, for food. Chris who is the chef, uses as much fresh local produce as possible, drawing inspiration from many sources, to create meals that are free of pretension and aim to satisfy the appetite, even of those who have spent their day walking the mountains, The menu has daily changes so guests always have new and interesting choices. Gluten-free meals are a speciality.

The village of Trefriw nestles into the north eastern edge of Snowdonia, an area full of lake, woods and hills and which offers a great diversity of walking, from a gentle lakeside amble to the challenge of Carnedd Llewellyn, a mountain only a little lower than Snowdon. For guests of a less active disposition, it is an excellent base to explore the area, with Bodnant Gardens, Conwy and Betws-y-coed all within 12/20 minutes drive, while few of the main attractions are more than an hour's drive along scenically stunning roads.

As well as our AA and Tourist Board ratings, we are referred to in the "Rough Guide to Wales" as the "…lovely Hafod Country Hotel" and also feature in the "AA Essential Guide to Wales", which picks out a very limited number of places. We knew nothing of these entries until we came across them ourselves. We also will feature in the AA Best Bed & Breakfast, a collection of establishment recommended to the AA by guests.
