Glendale HouseGlendale House

Built in 1875 by Edward Fuller Sewell, an uncle of Anna Sewell, the author of the novel "Black Beauty". It is a Victorian stone built residence occupying a prime position in the centre of this picturesque village, overlooking the common, where sheep graze right outside the garden gate. We have a large conservatory, and the house has a Victorian Kitchen Garden, with an ornamental fish pond and waterfall, and offers outstanding moor land views from every aspect.

The house is more recently famous as Dr Ferrenby's surgery in the Yorkshire TV series, "Heartbeat".

RecommendationsIn 1997 we were recommended for inclusion in the "Which" Best Bed and Breakfast Guide. We are particularly proud of this, because it is not a paid advertisement, and can only be included after an independent assessment following two recommendations. We are then inspected annually to ensure standards are maintained.

We are sure you will enjoy your stay and want to return again and again, as so many of our guests do.A recent entry in our guest book read:.............."We arrived as strangers, but left as friends."

Harry Potter

Goathland has been used as a setting in many TV programmes and films, including Victoria Woods "Great Train Journeys", The Noel Edmonds show, Sky TV's "The Wanderer" and Gwyneth Paltrow's "Possession". But in 2001 the Warner Bros film crews arrived in the village to start filming what was then a little known title "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". In the space of a couple of days, they built a whole office block in one of the fields, complete with potted trees and named director's carparking spaces. Goathland station was transformed into "Hogsmeade" station, simply by making the wall a couple of feet higher, and altering the names on the station, and the benches. The village became inundated with trucks, trailers, cameras, and reporters for about a week. The Warner Bros helicopter spent a couple of days doing aerial shots, and at playtimes, used to fly low over the school and wave at the kids. Several of the village children were used as extras, and my wife and two of her friends, were roped into becoming the wardrobe department, sewing "Hogwart" badges on all the uniforms, and altering costumes, including Robbie Coltrane's trousers.

In the film, Harry Potter and the rest of the students arrive at Kings Cross Station in London, to board the train to take them to "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry". They run through the wall to Platform 9¾ which takes them onto an old steam train, which eventually arrives at "Hogsmeade" station (which is actually Goathland station). The final scene in the film (and the last photo in this sequence) shows the train leaving Hogsmeade station, and thanks to special effects, has Hogwarts castle in the background.

Heartbeat

Goathland is possibly better known as Aidensfield, in the Yorkshire TV series, Heartbeat. Which first appeared on our screens on the 10th April 1992 and has now become a TV success all over the world. Heartbeat has a regular audience of around 16-17 million viewers each week and now has a fixed family slot each Sunday evening in the UK. Heartbeat is not just popular here in the UK, but it also has a huge following in many other countries such as Australia, Canada, Sweden and Denmark, and most of Europe. It has recently become very popular in Iran, where the muslim leaders have praised it as "true family entertainment!". In the whole of that time, there have only been 5 buildings used as "regulars". They are the Post office, the Goathland Hotel (Aidensfield Arms), Mostyn's Garage, (now Scripps), Greengrass's farm, and Glendale House (Dr.Ferrenby's surgery).

In the first three series, Glendale House featured as Dr. Ferenby's surgery, where Dr.Kate Rowan, (Niamh Cussack) wife of PC Nick Rowan, (Nick Berry) worked until Dr.Ferrenby drowned on a fishing trip. Kate Rowan herself, sadly, died of leukaemia in the 5th series. Bill Maynard, who played the part of Claude Greengrass, unfortunately suffered a real life heart attack, and has had to leave the programme. Celebrity guests who have appeared in Heartbeat, include Lulu, Jenny Agguter, Twiggy, Ronan Keeting, Gary Barlow, David Essex, Alan Price, and Charlotte Church. Over the years, there have been a lot of changes in the cast, but the programme, which screened its 312th on New Years Eve 2006, still continues to attract a very large audience around the world. The filming of series 17 began in May 2007.
