Windermere is an excellent base to explore the Lake district from, it is centrally located for excursions daily to all parts of Lakeland. If you do not wish to drive around the area there is a very good public transport system, including steamer services on all major waterways, linking the popular villages on each individual lake.

Minibus tours are also very popular means of sightseeing, with tours to all parts of the lakes. From the highest mountain passes and unsurpassed views to the small hamlets and friendly welcome of the local people. Most tour companies will collect and return you safely to your accommodation after your day of adventure.

Public service buses connect to all major towns in the Lake District, also to some of the smaller villages.

Windermere is a good base from which to visit the poetry world of William Wordsworth and visit his houses at Grasmere, Rydal and Cockermouth. The gardens at Rydal mount are well worth a visit.

Beatrix Potters house at far sawrey (hilltop) and the Beatrix Potter exhibition in Bowness are very quickly reached from Windermere.

If your pleasure is hillwalking, or just a leisurely couple of hours after breakfast then look no further, all of them are on hand.

The Lake District now offers a number of all year round attractions. Worth a visit is freshwater aquarium at Lakeside. The aquarium is easily reached by car or you may enjoy a leisurely cruise directly to the centre. Waterbuses and steamers depart frequently from Bowness promenade, Winter and Summer.

For the more adventurous there is an abundance of outdoor activities, including sailing, windsurfing and water skiing, also on most lakes there are all types of boat hire.

The Lake District is well known as being a great place to sample all kinds of food, from Ma's country cooking to connasseurs delights, they are all here to be sampled. You will not be disappointed.
