This intimate 17th century stone-built hotel retains its old world atmosphere yet provides all the modern facilities you need and the comfort you would wish for. It is the proprietors' desire to provide traditional English cooking of the highest standard at a reasonable price. Together with an interesting selection of wines we would hope to prove that good food needn't cost the earth. | What to see and do Hawes in Wensleydale is the ideal base for exploring the delights of James Herriot's Yorkshire and the Dales National Park.The countryside can be enjoyed on foot, on horseback, (there are pony trekking stables nearby) or by car. There is much to see, the rugged limestone scenery with its unusual features such as the 'Buttertubs', deep and strangely shaped holes close to the road to Swaledale through Buttertubs Pass, north of Hawes. Other features well worth seeing are Wensleydale's waterfalls. A couple of miles away on the other side of the dale is the highest unbroken waterfall in Britain, Hardrow Force, 100 feet high. Further down the dale are Aysgarth Falls, three of them, Upper, Middle and Lower.A few miles from Hawes is Semerwater, a lake formed by glacial action from which flows the shortest English river, the river Bain. |

| For those interested in history there are castles at Castle Bolton, Middleham and Richmond, all with a rich and varied past. There is the museum at Bolton Castle and the Upper Dales Folk Museum in Hawes itself. |

| This is one of the most photographed doors in the country. It forms part of the buildings grade II listed status. The arched doorway appears in many high profile dales guides and a number of publications of an historic interest. The original stone lintle was inscribed for the very first person to live in this cottage, now an integral part of Cocketts hotel. A one 'Thomas Arthur Fawcett' see initial bottom left, who was a Quaker of that time for his own pleasure. |

For walkers and cyclists, we are happy to provide packed lunches, hot flasks, drying facilities, secure parking for bikes/motor bikes. In house maps and walking guides, even the loan of a good walking stick if required. Accompanied walks can be arranged with a local guide if required . |

| Parking 10 places immediately in front of the hotel Hawes by road M6 motorway to Junction 37. Then A684 to Hawes. M1 motorway to A1 travelling north, or A1 travelling south. Until Leeming Bar services, then A684 to Hawes Hawes by rail Hawes is only 6 miles from Garsdale station. We are only too happy to collect guests from the station, by prior arrangement or phone 667312. Guests arriving without notice can contact the local taxi 667598 from the platform |
