Douglas and Catherine Fraser extend a warm welcome in the best traditions of Scottish hospitality, at one of the oldest coaching inns in the Highlands.

The Inn is delightfully situated just off the A83 on the upper reaches of Loch Fyne in Argyll. It presents to the visitor a haven of sparkling views, high mountains and magnificent woodlands and rivers.

We offer excellent accommodation in 14 bedrooms in a relaxed country atmosphere. All rooms are "en-suite" with central heating, radio and TV, direct dial telephones and tea/coffee making facilities.

There is a residents lounge, sauna, sunbed and a multi-gym. In our friendly bar and lounge you can sample many malt whisky's and enjoy a chat with the locals.

The stables from our coaching days have been converted into our Stables Restaurant, with old world charm, beamed ceiling, candlelight and views over the loch. Both table d'hote and a la carte menus are offered and include superbly prepared dishes such as saute haunch of venison in red wine sauce and Loch Fyne salmon steaks. A suitable wine list is available to complement your meal.

Childrens meals are also catered for and packed lunches when desired. 'Pub Grub' is also served in the bar all day.

The location of the Inn makes it an ideal centre for a touring holiday visiting such places as Loch Lomond, the Trossachs, the Mull of Kintyre and Campbeltown, Dunoon and the Cowal Peninsula, Tighnabruaich and the Kyles of Bute and the Western Highlands.

Further around the loch lies Inveraray with its famous castle, the ancient seat of the Clan Campbell. Inveraray Jail remains open all year round and has been voted Scotland's top new attraction. Further afield is Loch Awe with its enchanting island castle and the Ben Cruachan underground power station. Mini-bus tours leave the pass of Brander for the station, hewn from solid rock, one mile inside the mountain.

For the hill walker and climber, Cairndow is within easy reach of some of the finest hill walks and mountaineering in Scotland, including Glencoe. Some of the mountains only a few miles from the Inn are Beinn Ime, Ben Vane, Beinn an Lochain, Ben Bhuidhe and the "Cobbler".

Cairndow is also a favourite spot for boating and sea angling. River fishing can be arranged on one of two local rivers as can deer stalking for sportsmen in the autumn.

Perhaps you just want a little peace and quiet. We suggest a walk up Glen Fyne possible as far as the Lairige Dam, or just along the lane in the village, past the octagonal church, for a visit to the beautiful shrubbery gardens of Ardkinglas, with the tallest tree in Britain. Or why not idle away a sunny afternoon in our popular loch-side garden with a tang of sea air and the cry of gull and oyster catcher over the water?

Cairndow is a single house by the side of the loch, I believe, resorted to by gentlemen in the fishing season: it is a pleasant place for such a purpose..." - Dorothy Wordsworth in 1803.

"Changed horses at a small inn called Cairndow where the dear little Campbell children are staying, and who were at the windows - such lovely children! There were a few people collected, and the harness as well as the horses had to be changed, and a pair of leaders put on to pull us up the long steep ascent in Glenkinglas". - Queen Victoria, 29th September 1875.

How to get to Cairndow Inn

By Car: From the South; 1 hours leisurely drive from Glasgow, by Loch Lomond side to Tarbet, then the A83 through the "Arrochar Alps". From the North; Either the A82, Crianlarich down Loch Lomond to Tarbet and the A83, or the A85 to Dalmally, A819 to Inveraray and the A83.

By Train: To Arrochar, 10 miles away. Taxi can be arranged.

By Bus: To and from Glasgow (Buchanan St)

By Air: Glasgow 48 miles and Prestwick 78 miles
