Northumbria - a place for all seasons

Seahouses, situated in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, is an excellent touring centre for Northumberland and the Border Counties. The comprehensive network of quiet roads affords easy, relaxed driving through an area of immense variety in scenery, from the Cheviot Hills and their hidden valleys, through spacious farmlands to the Heritage Coast, with its miles of white sandy beaches and rocky headlands.

Tourists from Seahouses may discover the chain of attractive Border towns with their ancient abbeys and more modern woollen-mill shops! They lie beside their various streams in the shelter of the wide hills. From Kelso, travellers may follow the River Tweed along to Berwick, thehistoric and attractive gateway between England and Scotland. Or they may prefer to explore the moors, such as Hepburn, with its unrivalled views of the country and the coast, or the fastness of Otterburn moor and on to Keilder Water and Forest.

The fishing harbour at Seahouses is the point of departure for the National Trusts Farne Islands, the famous breeding ground of sea birds, especially the Artic tern and puffins, and the home of the Atlantic grey seal.

A few miles to the north of Seahouses, one may visit Lindisfarne, Holy Island of St Cuthbert and St Aidan, cradle of northern England's Christianity, and accessible across the causeway at low tide. Lindisfarne Nature Reserve provides marvellous opportunities for the ornithologist to observe many species in all seasons.

Among the castles famous in this region, rich in history and legend, are Bamburgh, Lindisfarne, Alnwick, Dunstanburgh and Warkworth. There are stately homes, too, such as Wallington and Cragside.

For the active, there are many golf courses, tennis, bowling and riding. The whole area offers splendid walks of all descriptions from short, easy strolls to the most strenuous long distance treks. And all this is within your reach from the Beach House Hotel.
