Horley is located to the south of Regate and Redhill, twin towns and to the north of Crawley and Gatwick Airport. Horley has become popular recently with commuters because you can get to London quickly from Horley railway station. Wates and Martin Grant Homes built nearly 2,600 new houses there after the Hortley Master Plas was approved in February 2005 by the Reigate and Banstead Bourough Council. The fact that the homes have been built on a green-belt that has a tendency to flood. The area also faces droughts during the summer because its water sources are not adequately spread.
Benedictine Abbey of St Peter at Chertsey took control of the Manor of Horley during Saxon times. Henry the VIII was passed the Manor when the monnasteries were dissolved in 1539. Over the next 60 years the Manor changed hands several times. The Manor became property of the Christ's Hospital in London in 1602. There is an orginal map of the Manor located in Guildhall in London.
The map shows Horley having three hamlets that surrounded a huge open common. In 1812 the Common became enclosed, there were new roads laid and the surrounding land was sold. Two turnpise were made, one in 1809 and another in 1816, so that regular coach sevices could proceed from London to Brighton. In 1841 the railway was put down and in the town a station was built.
While Horley has its own town council it is also part of the Borougj of Reigate and Banstead. Councillor Simon Marshell, elected in May 2007, is the Town Mayor and Chairman of the town council. Horley Town F.C. was started there in 1898. The town also has a bowls, tennis, hockey, cricket and new rugby club.
The only under the arches theatre is in Horley, the Archway Theatre. It is under a Vistoria Road railway brdige's arches. The theatre has an auditorium, bar, rehearsal room and studio. It seats 95 in its main auditorium and 40 in the studio. There are 10 full prodcutions put on by its company plus many studio event and children's productions.
