The quaint little town of Church Stretton is found in Shropshire England. The town itself can be found in the Shropshire Hills. The Church Stretton area has been settled since the Iron Age. The town received its market charter by King John in 1214. The market is still a popular feature of the town and is still held every Thursday and Saturday in the Town Square. Because of the way the town is set up, with many of the houses located along the hillside, and the beautiful mountainous landscapes Church Stretton is often referred to as Little Switzerland.
Visitors who like to golf will have no problem doing so here. The 18 hole golf course of Church Stretton is located only a kilometer from town. The 5,030 yards long course has a par of 66, which is one of the highest pars in the entire country. This course will be a nice challenge for anyone interested in a healthy round of golf. With hilly links and a location on the slopes of Bodbury Hill and Stanyeld Hill, you will find that there is a good reason for such a high par. This course also has the prestige of being the oldest golf course in Shropshire with a starting date of 1898.
Once a year the town plays host to the Church Stretton and South Shropshire Arts Festival. This festival takes place usually around the end of July through the first part of August. You can hear everything from Classical to Jazz music during the festival. There are also dramas, stage shows, illustrated talks, performance projects and monologues. The festival is also home to a spectacular Arts and Crafts exhibition. If you are planning to come to the Church Stretton and South Shropshire area this is the time to come so you can enjoy everything that the arts has to offer.
Since this is a market town be sure to schedule you stay so that you can take in the twice weekly market. Here you can get lots of fresh produce and local fair that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else. It is part of what makes Church Stretton so unique and fun to enjoy.
