Campbeltown, one of only a few spots in Scotland that is part of the distinct category of whisky producing region and has its one Campbeltown Single Malts but had 34 distilleries at one time. It once referred to itself as the whisky capital of the world. Most distilleries were put out of business by a combination of the U.S. prohibition and Great Depression with the move towards quality not quantity. There are just three distilleries currently active in Campbeltown that all have excellent reputation for their quality.

The town also has a grand museum and center for heritage. The museum has a large collection of artifacts from Campbeltown's history. It also has prehistoric items that have been excavated from many sites that surround Kintyre including axeheads, combs and jewelery. The museum is housed in a 19th Century building which is also the home for the town's library. The building included several exhibits and plaques that pay tribute to many people from Kintyre such as William McTaggart as well as William Mackinnon.

Wee Picture House is located nearby and is a small, distinct cinema with Art Deco decor that dates back to 1913 and is thought to be the oldest purpose built building Scotland has. All these building are on the waterfront along with a Celtic cross from the 14th Century that once served as a mercat cross too. Before the town ever existed St. Kieran resided near there. There is a cave that can be visited when the tide is low that has his name.

There is also a cave on Davaar Island that is nearby that is the place of a crucifixion painting from the 19th Century. It is visited by tourists and pilgrims alike. The annual Mull of Kintyre Music Festival is held in Campbeltown. The festival has acts that include not only newer bands on their way up as well as well known groups. Campbeltown Airport is located close by but it only runs services from Campbeltown to Glasgow on weekdays. Most of the transportation to and from Campbeltown is done from the sea or by roadways.
