Located in the historic county of Cumbria the town of Ambleside is situated at the top of England's largest lake, Windermere. There is evidence of the Ambleside area being founded around 79AD even though the town wasn't given its charter until 1650. Now this once quiet little town is considered the jewel in the Lakeland crown.
Visitors to Ambleside can visit the Roman Fort. These second century fort remains are well-marked. Believed to be built under Hadrian's rule to guard the Roman road, visitors can wander the ruins throughout the year and admission is free.
Probably the most photographed house in the Lake District, the Bridge house is another popular stop for visitors to Ambleside. The building was originally built as an apple store; its location was mainly in an effort to avoid paying land tax. Now it's a shop for the National Trust. It is a popular artist site too, being reinvented not just in photographs but in paintings and drawings.
Another popular stop is the William Wordsworth house of Rydal Mount and Gardens it is located near to Ambleside. Considered to be Wordsworth's 'most beloved' home the house was rented by the Wordsworth family from 1813 to 1859. The house is now open to be toured by visitors. During the spring and summer months the home is open daily from 9:30 to 5. From November to February the hours are 10 to 4 and they are closed on Tuesdays and major holidays.
There are also several pubs and restaurants for visitors to enjoy. There are almost ten pubs in a quarter mile radius. The large number is not just because of the tourists that visit this town but also the student body of the University located here.
