Witney's church St. Mary the Virgin, a Church of England parish church, dates back to Norman times. Its porch on the north side as well as the north aisle were added on during the late 12th century and had a major rebuild done in 1243. The present tower, chancel, transepts and spire were added during the rebuild. They were all made in Early English style. There were many side chapels added in the 14th century as well as some of the windows that church now has in its bane were added with the Perpendicular style. In 1849 in Wood Green the Holy Trinity parish church was built using the Early English style. Both parishes are now members of the same team parish.
The market in the town dates back to the Middle Ages. The traditional market is held on Thursdays but there is also a Saturday market too. The market square's buttercross is called that because the towns that surround Witney would come there to purchase their butter and eggs. It was constructed in 1600 with a clock being added in 1683. In the 18th century the town hall was built. It is a local legend that it was designed by Sir Christopher Wren but there is not evidence proving it.
Witney has been a well known crossing for the River Windrush. Thomas Wyatt, a famous architect, rebuilt the bridge in 1822 in Bridge Street. In the 18th century, on Wood Green, the friends Meeting House was built. The local Quakers have been in Witney since 1997 to exchange corn. On High street in 1850 the Methodist church was built. It is not just one of five Methodist churches or chapels that the town has. Our Lady and Saint Hugh, a Roman Catholic parish, was started in 1913. It was actually started in a chapel in 1881 in the West End before getting its own building. The chapel is now the home of the Elm Christian Fellowship.
