The small town of Moffat, located in east Scotland, was once a popular spa town. This town is still popular today with those who enjoy hill walking and the great outdoors. It is located close to the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, being only an hourS drive away from either town.
Thanks to the natural setting that is Moffat, this place is a popular destination for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Moffat Hills, as they are known, are probably the most well known walking areas in Dumfries and Galloway. And there is no wonder why. The scenery surrounding Moffat is a breathtaking site. There are many natural wonders for visitors to behold. Wander around the Devils' Beeftum and the Grey Mare's Tail.
If you are up for a real challenge then climb the highs of White Coomb. This hill, or mountain rather, stretches a whopping 2,696 feet. If you can't make it to the top, try going at least part way, the views stretch for hundreds of miles.
While you wander the hills you might even find signs of Merlin's presence. This is the area that the famed Merlin retreated to after he was defeated in battle in 573. There are many things around the Moffat and Edinburgh area that will lead you to see his influence. There is Arthur's seat and of course Merlin's Cave which is located just below the ridge in Edinburgh.
While you trek the hills be sure to keep your eyes open for the wide variety of wildlife that inhabit them. There are goats, eagles, buzzards and deer to see. If you check with the Rangers you might find that there are a lot of Ranger led activities to enjoy, these are season dependent so be sure to check with the rangers to find out what is available.
Many people enjoy roughing it in this area. Because there is a long distance path that connects Moffat to Potpatrick, it is popular among the true nature lovers. Here you will pass through Glen Trool and will even be able to follow the River Cree for a time. The path goes by places such as Wanlockhead, Bogue, Beattock, and Sanqhhar. There is also lots of open moorland for you to explore. You can enjoy the exercise, fresh air and even see some interesting local wildlife while you trek down this long path.
