In the county of Herefordshire England is the town of Ledbury. Today it is a wonderful little market town that is known for its large number of timber framed buildings. This ancient town dates back to 1086, the time of the Domesday Book. During this time the town was known as Liedeberge. Aside from it's interesting architecture Ledbury is known for being the home of Poets Elizabeth Barret Browning and John Masefield.
Because of Ledbury's history with poets it is home to the biggest poetry festival in the United Kingdom. Each year the festival is filled with an exciting array of events that include performers and poets from all over. You will be treated to live readings, workshops, music, films, performances, the slam, street events, open mics, and much more. Each of the ten days that it is held during the summer is filled with a wide variety of activities for you to enjoy. You don't have to know a thing about poetry to find something in this festival that is for you. And if you think you are a poetry expert you might be surprised to find that you don't know as much as you thought you did.
Another popular festival that takes place in Ledbury is The Big Chill. This music festival has been held annually since 1994 whine founders Pete Lawrence and Katrina Larkin put together the festival. This festival contains dance, alternative and "chill-out" music and is held on the grounds of Eastnor Castle in the first part of August. The festival actually started out as a series of ambient parties but grew into the outdoor festival that it is today. It has moved from its original site in the Black Moutains of Wales to where it is today over the course of several years. One thing is for certain though; those that attend are treated to high quality visuals, a highly unusual line up and awesome food.
Eastnor Castle is a popular tourist stop in its own right. Probably best known for being the current home of The Big Chill music festival it is a nineteenth century mock castle that is located just outside of Ledbury. This castle was built in 1810 and was home to the Cocks family. Today visitors can see the beautiful building that has been well preserved through the years. It is the site of the Big Chill festival as well as having been used in several movies and television series. It is also where Land Rover tests their vehicles for their off road capabilities.
